VIC: Boxing Day sales

MELBOURNE, Dec 26 AAP - Victoria's traditional Boxing Day sales started early this
morning with some stores opening at 8am (AEDT) for an expected rush of customers.

Myer and Daimaru opened early in Melbourne, keen to lure shoppers with discounts of
up to 50 per cent.

Director of operations for Daimaru Australia, Dennis Hirschfield, said Daimaru's Melbourne
Central store had customers queueing at its doors before 8am.

Mr Hirschfield said retailers were optimistic about good sales. "It's still a bit early
to tell but on the signs and indications we have it looks like we're going to have a good
day.

"It's quite busy, especially for this time of morning," he told AAP.

Mr Hirschfield said sales were geared to sell large volumes of discount goods rather
than give drastic reductions on a few high-price items - a tactic which has prompted overnight
queues and chaos among shoppers in the past.
